This sculpture is one of a pair commissioned by the Brussels City Parliament and designed to be a reminder of what can go wrong with urban planning. The city of Brussels underwent brutal and insensitive remodelling during the 1950s and 60s. When other European cities were necessarily rebuilding over bomb sites after the War, Brussels, a city that hadn’t suffered significant bomb damage, created its own urgency to tear down and remodel. This was often done to the detriment of historic buildings and peoples’ quality of life.
